Statement Regarding Türkiye’s Ongoing Military Operations in Northern Iraq
The Young Assyrians (TYA) expresses deep concerns regarding Türkiye’s military operations and incursions into northern Iraq. These actions, primarily targeting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)— classified as a terrorist group by Ankara and several Western allies —are putting innocent lives as well as the region’s infrastructure at risk.
Whilst we do not condone the actions of the PKK and recognise that their must be a response opposing their actions, Türkiye’s current military operations are not only in close proximity to Indigenous Assyrian settlements but are endangering the safety and well-being of countless civilians. Homes, schools, and places of worship are now under direct threat, and the displacement of native communities has become a stark reality.
We call on the Australian Government to urgently intervene and pressure Türkiye to prioritise the safety and security of innocent civilians throughout these operations. Additionally, any military action should adhere to international law and with respect to the region’s territorial integrity.
The Assyrian National Council of Australia Inc. (ANCA) has taken a proactive stance by writing to the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Hon. Penny Wong, to express their deep concerns regarding the ongoing situation. The ANCA has highlighted the dire impact these military operations are having on Indigenous Assyrian communities and has urged the Australian government to use its diplomatic channels to advocate for the protection of civilians.
