Governor-General Hosts President of The Young Assyrians at Admiralty House
On Thursday, 25 July, Ms. Breteil Tigris David, President of The Young Assyrians (TYA), attended a special luncheon hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Ms. Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. The luncheon took place at Admiralty House in Sydney and included participation from several young emerging leaders.
“Upon meeting Her Excellency, the Honourable Ms. Sam Mostyn AC, I quickly discovered that she is a person who genuinely cares. Despite only having held the position for a short time, she has already taken action to bring people together, encouraging open and sometimes uncomfortable conversations rather than ostracising those who may not agree.”

The discussions held during the event were both insightful and impactful, as Ms. David engaged in meaningful conversations with Her Excellency about pressing issues that are of importance to the Assyrian-Australian community. The dialogue provided valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing our community and underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing these issues.
“One story that particularly stood out to me was when Her Excellency shared her experience of welcoming two Indigenous Australian aunties to Kirribilli House. After she apologised for the colonial statues and artworks on display, one of the aunties held her hand and said, "That's okay. It is a part of Australia’s story and is not something to be erased, just as we will not be erased." This sentiment deeply resonated with Her Excellency, and she shared it with everyone in attendance. As an Indigenous Assyrian, I felt at peace knowing that Her Excellency believes that rewriting history in either direction is a notion that cannot and must not be tolerated. I look forward to working with her more closely over the next five years.”
